GPHG nominees take the centre stage at Dubai Watch Week

The seventy two pre-selected timepieces vying for the coveted Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG) awards will be exhibited during the much-awaited Dubai Watch Week

Under the patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Latifa Bint Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum and the support of Dubai Culture & Arts Authority, and in partnership with the GPHG, Ahmed Seddiqi & Sons, the Middle East’s largest luxury watch retailer, has organised the much-awaited Dubai Watch Week, an extraordinary five-day affair that celebrates the achievements of the watch industry through a cultural and educational horology programme that includes forums, workshops and an auction. Taking place at the Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC), from the 18th to 22nd of October, 2015, the Dubai Watch Week will also highlight the GPHG exhibition that will present the seventy two pre-selected timepieces that are competing for the prestigious GPHG awards.

Created in 2001 to celebrate the 12th Art, under the patronage of the City and State of Geneva, and officially established as a foundation recognised as a public interest organisation from 2011, the GPHG annually highlights and awards theexcellence of contemporary watchmaking creations. For the past fifteen years, it has enabled an international audience to follow the evolution of this art through a competition culminating in a prize-giving ceremony, which is held in autumn of each year in Geneva. This annual competition is open to all brands, involves several hundred watches that are launched during the course of the year, and awards the highest honours in the watchmaking field.

An international and independent jury composed of acknowledged specialists establishes the list of prize winners. This year, chaired by Aurel Bacs, twenty six personalities known for their watchmaking expertise make up the multidisciplinary, international GPHG 2015 jury, joined for the first time by artists and musicians Dieter Meier (Yello) and Eric Singer (Kiss).

In order to pay tribute to the contemporary creative talent and watchmaking expertiseas well as the diversity of various watchmaking creations, the GPHG 2015 has opened a total of twelve categories including the five new categories such as the Tourbillon, Calendar, Chronograph, Striking and Mechanical Exception. In addition to the prizes which correspond to these categories, the notable awards also include the prestigious “Aiguille d’Or” Grand Prix, the Innovation Watch Prize, the Horological Revelation Prize which rewards a creation by a youthful brand, the Revival Prize which recognises the best contemporary reinterpretation of an iconic model, as well as the Special Jury Prize and the Public Prize.

The watches pre-selected for the GPHG, as well as the winners, take part in a travelling exhibition inviting to discover and admire the finest timepieces of the year, exceptionally united on this occasion, and to share precious moments of horological culture. A travelling exhibition that features the seventy two timepieces will be viewed in Hong Kong, Seoul, Dubai, Geneva and London before and after the GPHG 2015 awarding ceremony that will take place on the 29th of October, 2015 at the Grand Théâtre de Genève.

The GPHG exhibition during the Dubai Watch Week will be hosted at the Opera Gallery at the DIFC from the 19th to 21st of October, 2015.
