Maverick offerings from URWERK
In just 20 years of its history, URWERK’s original approach to watchmaking has both shaken traditionalists and won the respect of collectors. This year, the brand is back with artistic and maverick timepieces that are bound to become collectors’ watches
UR-T8 “Colibri” with its T8 “Colibri” art knife
Created by Emmanuel Esposito, maker of bladed masterpieces, the UR-T8 “Colibri” watch comes with a T8 “Colibri” knife. The UR-T8 watch Colibri case features hundreds of individual pieces of black-lip mother-of-pearl that were cut into diamond shapes, hand-sorted and arranged according to how each reflects the light. The resulting mosaic inlay oscillates between light and dark with movement. Pins in 18k gold accentuate each pearl intersection, and the two mosaic inlays are set into stainless steel frames and housed in the 3-D sculpted titanium watchcase. The Colibri T-8 model is a customised folding knife. Its handle frame in 416 stainless steel encases a blade mechanism, which runs on ceramic ball bearings. The knife’s handle, lock button and blade spine feature a distinctive chromatic effect, similar to the URWERK T8 case. Every piece of pearl is connected by individual 18k gold pins, and each mosaic inlay is outlined with a black vintage Bakelite frame.
The UR-T8 Skull
A joint creation by URWERK and Johnny Dowell a.k.a “King Nerd”, the UR-T8 Skull is a special edition, limited to five watches only. Dowell is an engraver; inspired by his uncle, Dowell started his career with London gunmaker, James Purdey & Sons. For 15 years, he learned how to engrave metal on sporting and collectors’ guns. He entered the world of watchmaking when a customer asked him to personalise a Reverso watch. When he learned that he was to work on the UR-T8, he did not think twice, as he loved the UR-T8, which is one of his favourite URWERKs. The creative process took months. Housing the Self-winding UR 8.01, the timepiece has a case of hand-engraved Grade 5 titanium and bronze.
UR-105 CT “Maverick”
The self-winding Maverick in bronze and titanium is the latest limited edition of URWERK’s UR-105 CT wandering-hour watch. Made in honour of mad artists, the Maverick features Urwerk’s signature wandering-hours complication in which the hours on satellites progress in turn along a track of minutes. Four satellites, each holding three-hour numerals are mounted on an open-worked rotating carousel. The rotation of the carousel and the sequential changing of the hours are smooth and silent, thanks to an improved design. Push the sliding tab on the UR-105 CT Maverick to discover its inner workings, where the satellite hours on the four arms of a new open-worked carousel can be seen. The wandering hour combines a digital and an analog way of indicating the time. A power-reserve indicator and digital seconds make up the rest of the indications on the dial.
