Jaeger-LeCoultre gets proactive for Glacier Bay
Since 2008, luxury watch-maker Jaeger-LeCoultre and special agency, UNESCO have been working together to protect the 47 marine sites appearing on the UNESCO World Heritage list
The two entities selected the 22nd of April, 2015, a date dedicated to the 45th anniversary of Earth Day, to highlight the partnership and unveil a short video taken by the Manufacture in recognition of the hard work that is carried out by scientists and project managers who preserve the Glacier Bay National Park site, located on the Canadian border of Alaska.
The presentation was held at Jaeger-LeCoultre’s plush New York Boutique and saw an impressive turnout of well-wishers who studied the video that retraced the history of the site, which was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1992. Not only does the site shelter some of the last glaciers on our planet, but it also houses large areas of non-polar ice fields, a spectacular forest and numerous breath-taking fjords.
Glacier Bay is home to mammals such as porpoises, seals, sea lions, several species of whales as well as the famous sea otter whose precious fur almost caused its extinction several centuries ago. These marine animals are well-protected thanks to a set of very strict preservation policies and management rules that are keenly enforced. One of the rules is the regular inspection of incoming boats to ensure safety of the park and its inhabitants, which at the same time enables data to be gathered on the interaction between boats and the large marine mammals.
